How to Park a Car: the Reference-Point Method

Back-in, parallel and front-in parking taught the way Japanese driving schools teach it — three steering positions, stop-set-move, and fixed reference points you can trust.

Most people park badly for one simple reason: they steer while the car is moving and try to "chase" the parking spot by feel. Professional instructors teach the opposite. You stop the car, set the wheel to one of just three positions, then move slowly and watch a reference point — a spot on your car lined up against a line or corner of the space. Parking stops being guesswork and becomes a repeatable procedure.

The three rules that fix parking

  1. The wheel has only three positions: full left, straight, full right. Turn it all the way or not at all. Partial angles are for experts; full lock makes every maneuver geometrically repeatable.
  2. Stop → set the wheel → move. Turning the wheel while stationary (dry steering) is perfectly fine on modern cars. Never steer and roll at the same time during the key transitions.
  3. Creep speed only. Walking pace or slower. Speed is what turns a small aiming error into a scraped bumper.

One more mindset rule: a correction maneuver — stopping, pulling forward, and re-angling (a switchback) — is not a failure. Instructors plan for them. Two calm switchbacks beat one rushed scrape every time.

Back-in (reverse) perpendicular parking

Backing into a perpendicular spot is the standard in Japan and much of Asia, and it's objectively the safer habit: you do the tricky maneuver into a space you just looked at, and later you drive out forward with full visibility. It also needs less aisle width than driving in nose-first, because the rear wheels — the ones that "pivot" — lead the way in.

Back-in with the pre-angle method: ① approach ② stop at the line, nose angled out ③ full-lock reverse arc ④ straighten and back in.

Step by step

  1. Approach with a gap. Drive along the aisle keeping roughly 0.8–1 m between your car and the row of parked cars. Too close and your rear corner clips the neighbor; too far and you run out of aisle.
  2. Pull past the spot and stop. Drive forward until your rear axle is roughly past the far line of your spot — in practice, stop when the spot's near line appears by your shoulder, or use the simulator's orange stop line to build the feel for this position.
  3. Pre-angle the nose (optional but recommended). At the stop, turn the wheel full away from the spot and creep forward until the car sits at roughly 30–45° to the aisle. This "swing out" is how instructors make tight aisles workable.
  4. Stop. Full lock toward the spot. Reverse. Creep backward and let the car rotate around its rear wheels. Watch the inside rear wheel in your door mirror: it should pass about 30 cm from the near corner of the spot. If it's going to clip, stop, pull forward a touch, and resume — that's a normal switchback.
  5. Straighten at the right moment. When the car is almost parallel with the spot lines (about 88–90°), stop, set the wheel straight while stationary, then back straight in. Straightening "on the roll" is how people end up crooked.
  6. Watch the depth. Use the rear window, mirrors tilted down, or a wall reference. Stop with 20–30 cm behind you. Done.

Parallel parking

Parallel parking is the same idea rotated 90°: two full-lock arcs joined back-to-back into an S-shape. If the bay is at least about 1.5× your car length, one clean S gets you in.

Parallel parking: ① align beside the front car ② reverse-right arc to ~30–45° ③ reverse-left arc until parallel, then center.
  1. Line up beside the car in front of your bay, about 0.7–1 m away, mirrors roughly level with theirs.
  2. Reverse straight until your rear axle is level with that car's rear bumper. Stop. Wheel full toward the curb. Creep backward.
  3. At roughly 30–45° — when the bay's far corner appears in your curb-side mirror — stop, set the wheel straight, and back until your inside rear wheel is near the curb line.
  4. Wheel full away from the curb, keep reversing: the nose swings in. Stop when parallel, then pull forward to center the car in the bay.

Tight bay? Work the same S in small bites, using straight-back moves to clear the front car's bumper. The simulator's guided "shuffle" mode shows exactly this.

Front-in parking

Nose-first perpendicular parking looks easiest but has a catch: your front outer corner sweeps a much wider arc than the rear wheels. With neighbors on both sides, a clean one-shot front-in genuinely needs a wider stall (roughly 2.9 m for a compact car versus the standard 2.5 m) or a swing-out approach. This is exactly why lots designed for front-in parking paint wider stalls — and why driving schools teach back-in for tight ones. Remember you'll also reverse out blind later; check for traffic twice.
